Haryana Government Implements 35% Minimum Wage Increase with Immediate Effect
The Haryana government has officially issued a notification to bring a substantial 35% increase in minimum wages into effect, following its announcement just a day earlier. This revised pay structure is now active, with district administrations directing the labor department to ensure its immediate and comprehensive implementation across all industrial units in the state.
Enforcement and Compliance Measures
To guarantee adherence to the new wage standards, enforcement teams will commence inspections, particularly targeting manufacturing clusters where contractual workers constitute a significant portion of the workforce. Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar emphasized that directions have been issued to labor department officials for the effective execution of this increase in Gurgaon, aiming to ensure workers receive the full benefits of the decision and that labor laws are strictly enforced.
The notification specifies that the wage hike will come into effect from April 1, 2026, as confirmed by Kumar. He urged all industrial units and organizations in the city to cooperate on a priority basis in implementing the government's decision to raise minimum wages for workers.
Government's Commitment to Worker Welfare
Kumar highlighted that protecting the rights of workers and providing them with fair remuneration is a shared responsibility of the government and the industrial sector. He described the wage increase as a crucial step towards improving workers' standard of living, ensuring economic security, and strengthening social balance. Additionally, he appealed to industrial units and associations to adopt this public welfare measure in a positive spirit and implement it effectively within their establishments.
Urging workers to resume their duties, Kumar stated, "All workers should adopt a positive approach, return to work at their establishments, and cooperate in carrying forward production activities smoothly." He reassured that the government and administration are fully committed to safeguarding workers' interests.
Industry Backlash and Criticism
Despite the government's push, industry bodies have strongly criticized the move, labeling the wage hike as hasty and implemented without adequate consultation. They argue that the sharp rise in labor costs will strain businesses already grappling with higher input prices and volatility in global markets.
Deepak Maini of the Progressive Federation of Trade and Industry (PFTI) expressed concerns, noting, "The proposal to increase the minimum wages was tabled before the cabinet on Wednesday and within a few hours it was accepted. On Thursday, the notification was issued. It never happened so fast. It should have been done after proper consultation." This criticism underscores the tension between labor welfare initiatives and business sustainability in the current economic climate.
