Himachal Tourism Body Ends Discounts for Top Officials to Cut Waste
Himachal Tourism Ends Discounts for Top Officials

The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has decided to withdraw special privileges that were previously granted to several top-ranking officials, both official and non-official, across its 56 hotels. This move is part of a broader effort to reduce wasteful expenditure and improve financial discipline within the state-owned tourism body.

Perks Withdrawn for Top Officials

According to reliable sources, chairmen and vice-chairmen, who are mostly political appointees, along with the managing director, typically a bureaucrat, will no longer receive the heavily discounted benefits that were attached to their positions. Previously, these officials were entitled to a room at any HPTDC hotel for a nominal fee of just Rs 100 per day, along with a 50% discount on food during their tenure. Additionally, they enjoyed a 50% discount on room tariffs and food even after demitting office, a benefit that has now been completely withdrawn.

Changes for Board Members

Members of the Board of Directors were also entitled to a 50% discount on accommodation for their son's or daughter's wedding, a 40% discount on food, and a 20% discount on transport facilities provided by HPTDC. These entitlements have also been revoked as part of the new policy.

Furthermore, both official and non-official directors on the HPTDC Board used to receive free room and food at HPTDC hotels when attending Board meetings. In addition, they were eligible for a lifelong 30% discount on room tariffs. The state government has decided to withdraw these facilities as well.

Financial Challenges and Competition

More than two dozen HPTDC hotels and restaurants are currently operating at a loss, despite being situated in picturesque and idyllic locations. A majority of these hotels require major renovation and a facelift to become profitable. However, due to the state government's severe financial constraints, funds are not available for such an exercise. Faced with stiff competition from private players, HPTDC is no longer the first choice for tourists, necessitating these cost-cutting measures.

The withdrawal of these perks is seen as a step towards rationalizing expenses and ensuring that public funds are used more efficiently. It remains to be seen whether these measures will help improve the corporation's financial health in the long run.
