Ahmedabad: Hitachi Energy India Ltd on Friday announced it will invest around Rs 2,000 crore to set up a new large power transformer manufacturing facility in Vadodara district, in one of the biggest recent investments in India’s power equipment manufacturing sector.
The company on Friday announced that the new plant at Karjan near Vadodara is expected to be completed by FY28 and will manufacture large power transformers for applications including high-voltage transmission, HVDC systems, power generation, AI data centres and large industrial projects.
The investment comes amid rising demand for transmission infrastructure and grid modernisation as India accelerates renewable energy integration and industrial electrification. According to the Central Electricity Authority, India will require investments of nearly Rs 7.93 lakh crore in transmission infrastructure to integrate over 900GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2035.
The new facility will add to Hitachi Energy’s existing manufacturing presence in Gujarat, where the company already operates transformer factories, besides insulation and component facilities in Mysore and Halol. “By expanding our manufacturing presence, we aim to empower local communities, create skilled jobs, and deliver innovative solutions that support the country’s energy and sustainability goals,” said N Venu, managing director and CEO of Hitachi Energy India Ltd.
The company said the factory would be developed as a fully digital and LEED-certified facility with advanced manufacturing technologies and sustainability-focused operations. Bruno Melles, CEO of transformers business unit at Hitachi Energy, said, “India is among the world’s fastest-growing energy markets, and the new facility would strengthen local manufacturing capabilities while supporting infrastructure development. The project is expected to generate over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs.”
