Indian LPG Carriers Safely Navigate Strait of Hormuz Amid Regional Conflict

In a significant development for India's energy security, two Indian-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers have successfully crossed the conflict-affected Strait of Hormuz early Saturday. This strategic passage comes amid ongoing disruptions in West Asia, providing a crucial boost to domestic energy supplies.

Vessels En Route to Gujarat Ports with Substantial Cargo

Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Shipping, confirmed during a media briefing that the LPG carriers Shivalik and Nanda Devi are now safely navigating toward Indian ports. Shivalik is heading to Mundra while Nanda Devi is destined for Kandla, both located in Gujarat.

The two vessels are transporting a combined total of 92,700 tonnes of LPG and are expected to dock at their respective Indian ports between March 16 and 17. These ships were among 24 vessels that had been stranded on the western side of the strategic waterway since hostilities erupted in the region.

Government Assures Adequate Fuel Supplies Despite Geopolitical Tensions

Addressing concerns about potential fuel shortages, petroleum ministry officials emphasized that India maintains sufficient availability of petrol and diesel. Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery) Sujata Sharma stated during an inter-ministerial briefing that refineries are operating at full capacity despite disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict.

"As far as crude oil and refineries are concerned, we have a sufficient supply of crude and our refineries are operating at full capacity. There have been no reports of any dry-out at retail outlets. Adequate petrol and diesel are available," Sharma affirmed.

She further clarified that India currently produces enough petrol and diesel domestically to meet requirements, eliminating any immediate need for imports of these fuels.

LPG Supply Concerns and Alternative Solutions

While overall fuel supplies remain stable, officials expressed particular concern about cooking gas availability given the prevailing geopolitical situation. "Regarding LPG supply, I would like to say that it is still a matter of concern for us in view of the prevailing geopolitical situation. However, no dry-out has been reported," Sharma noted.

The government is actively encouraging commercial consumers facing supply disruptions to transition to piped natural gas (PNG) as an alternative. In this context, the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) has conducted meetings with city gas distribution operators to facilitate immediate PNG connections where feasible.

Sharma explained that after considerable discussion regarding commercial cylinders, authorities decided to allocate some LPG specifically for commercial consumers. Distribution has already commenced in approximately 29 states and Union territories.

Sharp Increase in Panic Bookings Prompts Government Appeal

Officials have observed a dramatic surge in LPG bookings, which they attribute to panic-driven behavior among consumers. Sharma revealed that booking numbers have escalated from approximately 7.5-7.6 million to nearly 8.8 million within a short period.

"Panic booking is still happening on a very large scale. Yesterday, we informed you that the number of bookings was around 7.5-7.6 million, and now that number has increased to almost 8.8 million. So this is nothing but panic booking," she emphasized.

The government has made a direct appeal to citizens, urging restraint and responsible consumption. "I would like to appeal to the citizens of the country to avoid panic booking and to make bookings only when there is an actual need. This will be good for everyone," Sharma stated.

Digital Adoption Progress in LPG Bookings

Highlighting technological advancements in the sector, officials noted that most LPG bookings are now conducted online. Currently, approximately 84 percent of bookings occur through digital channels, though authorities aim to increase this figure to nearly 100 percent for greater efficiency and transparency.

The safe passage of Indian LPG carriers through the Strait of Hormuz represents a critical achievement in maintaining energy supply chains during regional instability, while government measures seek to balance adequate fuel availability with responsible consumption patterns.
