NEW DELHI: LPG sales in May declined by over 19% year-on-year, while petrol and diesel consumption grew 2.8% and 1%, respectively, according to government data released on Tuesday.
LPG Sales Decline
Provisional data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) showed that LPG sales fell to 2.1 million tonnes (MT) in May 2025 from 2.6 MT during the same period in the previous year. Officials attributed the decline to government-led demand management measures amid disruptions in supply flows and seasonal variations. Compared with 2.2 MT in April 2025, LPG sales were down more than 4%.
Given India's heavy dependence on West Asia for cooking gas supplies, the government restricted LPG supplies to the commercial sector, cracked down on sales in the grey market, checked diversions, and increased the waiting period for refills to manage demand.
Petrol and Diesel Demand
Sales of petrol and diesel rose, though marginally. In a statement, Hindustan Petroleum said the growth was driven by strong demand from transportation, agriculture, freight movement, and rural activity during the peak summer season.
Aviation Fuel Consumption
Consumption of aviation fuel registered a year-on-year decline of 0.8% in May, the data revealed.
Overall, the energy sector continues to navigate challenges related to supply chain disruptions and seasonal demand fluctuations, with the government implementing targeted measures to ensure stable supply of essential fuels.
