IndiGo CEO Steps Down in Wake of December Operational Crisis
In a significant development for India's aviation sector, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers has resigned from his position with immediate effect. This move comes directly in the aftermath of the airline's unprecedented schedule collapse last December, which left hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded across airports nationwide.
Founder Rahul Bhatia Assumes Interim Management Role
IndiGo parent company InterGlobe Enterprises announced in a regulatory filing on Tuesday that airline founder and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will "in the interim assume management of the affairs of the company." This transition marks a critical moment for India's largest airline by market share.
In an internal email to employees sent on Tuesday, Bhatia made his disappointment about the December chaos abundantly clear. "What happened last December should never have taken place," he wrote. "Our customers didn't deserve it and nor did all of you, especially the frontline employees who bore most of the brunt for no fault of theirs."
Bhatia expressed profound gratitude to staff members who worked tirelessly to restore operations, stating: "I wish to place on record my indebtedness to all my colleagues who carried the company's cross with grace and dignity, and ploughed through sleepless nights to restore IndiGo's operational integrity."
Both Major Indian Airlines Now Seeking New Leadership
With Elbers' departure, both of India's largest airlines—IndiGo and Tata Group's Air India—are now actively scouting for new chief executives. This simultaneous leadership vacuum at the top of India's aviation industry represents a rare occurrence that could reshape competitive dynamics.
The December operational crisis occurred during Russian President Vladimir Putin's state visit to Delhi, compounding the logistical challenges. The widespread flight cancellations left stranded passengers furious, with some still awaiting refunds for cancelled flights months later.
The disruption also provoked government anger and deeply upset Bhatia, who was recuperating from surgery in Switzerland at the time. While regulatory actions against responsible personnel and fines against IndiGo have been initiated, Elbers' resignation is viewed as the most significant organizational response triggered by the December chaos.
Bhatia's Expanded Role and Commitment to Recovery
Signing his email as "Rahul alias ('Main Hoon Na')," referencing the Shah Rukh Khan character, the founder outlined his approach to the interim leadership role: "I step into my expanded role of managing the affairs of IndiGo with a deep sense of responsibility not only to the company's customers and its shareholders, but to every employee who powers this airline."
He continued: "I see the resilience in the effort you put in, and I greatly value your dedication. I remain, as I have always been, fully committed to strengthening our culture, reinforcing operational excellence, and ensuring that we continue to deliver exceptional service and value to our customers."
Senior officials briefed on the matter revealed that leadership changes had been planned for some time but awaited operational stabilization. "They have to run the airline and couldn't have removed those responsible in one go," explained one official familiar with the deliberations.
Elbers' Resignation and Transition Details
In his resignation letter to Rahul Bhatia, Elbers cited personal reasons for his departure: "...due to personal reasons, I herewith submit my resignation from the position of CEO of IndiGo with effect from (Tuesday). I would request that notice period may be waived off.... If the company so desires, obviously, I will be available for any handover or transition."
Elbers had assumed the CEO role in September 2022, taking leadership as the post-pandemic domestic market leader was eyeing significant expansion in international operations. The airline formally informed the Bombay Stock Exchange that Elbers "will be relieved from the service of the company effective close of business hours on March 10, 2026."
As IndiGo approaches its 20th anniversary this August, the airline now looks to return to its foundational strength—operational excellence—much like the resilient character Rahul from Main Hoon Na that Bhatia referenced in his communication.
