Access Life, in collaboration with the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) and the Chellaram Foundation, has inaugurated Karnataka's first dedicated support centre for paediatric bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients. The centre, located in Manipal, aims to provide comprehensive care and accommodation for children undergoing BMT and their families.
Facilities and Services Offered
The new support centre is designed to ease the burden on families by offering a home-like environment near the hospital. It includes fully furnished rooms, a kitchen, and common areas for relaxation. Medical staff will be available round-the-clock to assist with post-transplant care, nutrition, and emotional support. The centre can accommodate up to 10 families at a time, ensuring that caregivers can stay close to their loved ones during the critical recovery period.
Addressing a Critical Gap
Bone marrow transplantation is a complex procedure that requires prolonged hospital stays and follow-up care. Many families from rural areas face financial and logistical challenges in accessing treatment. This centre aims to reduce the dropout rate and improve outcomes by providing affordable accommodation and psychosocial support. Dr. H. S. Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of MAHE, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the institution's commitment to holistic healthcare.
Partnership and Community Impact
The Chellaram Foundation funded the construction and operational costs, while Access Life will manage day-to-day activities. Representatives from all three organizations attended the inauguration ceremony. The centre is expected to serve over 100 families annually, significantly reducing the financial strain on parents. It also offers counseling sessions and educational workshops to help families navigate the transplant journey.
Future Plans
Plans are underway to expand the centre's capacity and integrate telemedicine services for remote follow-ups. The partners hope to replicate this model in other states with high BMT demand. The initiative has been widely praised by medical professionals and patient advocacy groups as a pioneering step in paediatric oncology care in Karnataka.
