Kejriwal Urges Punjab to Counter Chinese Imports, Promises Full Govt Support
Kejriwal: Punjab Must Counter Chinese Imports with Govt Support

Kejriwal Challenges Punjab to Replace Chinese Goods with Local Production

At the Progressive Punjab Investors' Summit 2026 in Chandigarh, Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal delivered a passionate appeal for industrialists to harness Punjab's entrepreneurial spirit to counter the dominance of Chinese imports in Indian markets.

Everyday Items from China: A National Concern

Kejriwal highlighted a comprehensive list of everyday Chinese products flooding Indian markets, expressing deep frustration. "My blood boils that 75 years after independence, we cannot even make a plastic bucket," he stated in Hindi, criticizing India's reliance on imports for basic items.

The AAP leader pointed out that these imports range from practical goods like plastic buckets, stationery, LED bulbs, and mobile phone chargers to culturally significant items such as idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha worshipped during Diwali, and even effigies of Ravan, Meghnath, and Kumbhkaran used in Dussehra celebrations.

Contrasting Indian Talent with Import Dependence

Kejriwal expressed a mix of national pride and pain, noting that while global tech giants like Adobe, Microsoft, and IBM are led by people of Indian origin, India still imports basic kitchen masala boxes and alarm clocks from China. "I am proud of my country's talent, and yet, I am deeply pained to hear that we import plastic toys from China," he told the gathered industrialists.

The "Kejriwal Guarantee" for Industrial Support

Offering what he termed a "Kejriwal ki guarantee" to the industry, the Delhi Chief Minister promised that the Punjab government would provide every facility needed to compete with China. He revealed that a business-friendly environment had already helped attract Rs 1.50 lakh crore in actual investments over the last four years in Punjab.

Kejriwal urged entrepreneurs to view competition with China as a patriotic mission rather than merely a profit-making venture. "We talk about becoming No. 1 in the country, but our target should actually be to defeat China, and we will provide you with whatever it takes to achieve that," he declared.

Quoting Bollywood to Emphasize the Challenge

To underscore his point about taking on formidable challenges, Kejriwal quoted from the film Tezaab: "Isko haraya to kya kiya, usko haraya to kya kiya, Dara Singh ko harao to jane (What is the point in defeating these smaller players; you only prove your mettle if you defeat a champion like Dara Singh)."

Systemic Failures and New Reforms

An IIT Kharagpur alumnus himself, Kejriwal blamed systemic failures and a historical lack of faith in citizens for India's reliance on foreign goods. "The systems in our country are so faulty that they don't allow anyone to take such initiatives. In the last 75 years, the governments did not believe in their people," he alleged.

He detailed administrative reforms implemented by the Bhagwant Mann government, including:

  • Launching the 'Fast Track' portal in June 2025 for single-window approvals within 45 days
  • Requiring only self-certification for MSMEs to reduce bureaucratic hurdles
  • Investing heavily in health and education, inspired by Lee Kuan Yew's Singapore model

Kejriwal noted that these efforts have yielded results, with Punjab now ranked first in education according to a central government study.

Punjab's Economic Revival and Investment Commitments

Reflecting on Punjab's economic trajectory, Kejriwal observed that the state had fallen from its 1980s peak as the top per capita income earner to the 18th spot by the time AAP took over in 2022. He described the industrial atmosphere then as "gloomy" with businesses shifting to states like Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.

The AAP leader contrasted this with previous regimes where setting up industries required recommendations and bribes, and even then work often didn't progress. "Now, that is no longer the case," he asserted.

Kejriwal claimed significant success at the investors summit, announcing that on the very first day, Punjab secured investment commitments worth over Rs 10,000 crore. Major industry leaders including HMEL, Tata Steel, JSW, Trident Group, and Hero Industries announced plans to expand and establish ventures in the state.

Healthcare Initiatives and Political Philosophy

The AAP leader also highlighted healthcare reforms, including a new Rs 10 lakh health insurance scheme for poor farmers and labourers designed to prevent debt cycles that often lead to tragedy.

Characterizing his party's approach, Kejriwal described the Aam Aadmi Party as a "political startup and a unicorn" that achieved national party status in just 10-12 years. He emphasized that his guarantee to industrialists was not a hollow promise, stating, "We fulfilled all our pre-poll promises... you guide us and we will provide you with the right environment."

Kejriwal concluded with a renewed call to action: "Tell us what you need to outshine China and we will provide it to you. It's not about making profit; we have to do it out of patriotism." His message reinforced the vision of not just competing with Chinese imports but eventually exporting Indian-made products, including religious idols, back to China.
