Government Reports Sharp Decline in LPG Panic Booking, Assures Adequate Stock Nationwide
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has announced a notable reduction in panic booking of LPG cylinders across India, with only 55 lakh bookings reported on Thursday. This development comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions that have raised concerns about the availability of essential commodities, particularly fuel and gas.
Inter-Ministerial Briefing Highlights Improved Situation
During an inter-ministerial briefing held on Friday, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, provided an update on the current state of LPG supply. She emphasized that panic booking has significantly decreased, stating, "There is no panic booking now. Only 55 lakh LPG booking reported yesterday." Sharma reassured consumers that there is no shortage of supply, with adequate stock available nationwide and no outlets running dry.
Persistent Concerns and Shift in Consumer Behavior
Despite the positive trends, Sharma acknowledged that the LPG issue remains worrisome. She highlighted a shift in consumer behavior, noting that approximately 7.5 lakh LPG customers have transitioned to piped natural gas (PNG), indicating a move towards alternative energy sources.
Strengthened Monitoring and Enforcement Actions
To address irregularities and ensure smooth supply, the government has implemented robust monitoring mechanisms. Sharma informed that control rooms and district monitoring committees have been established in 32 states and union territories. Additionally, enforcement actions have been intensified, with 4,500 raids conducted across the country, including 1,100 in Uttar Pradesh, and 1,800 surprise inspections carried out by oil marketing companies (OMCs).
Public Appeal and Price Adjustments
Sharma appealed to the public to follow proper delivery channels for LPG cylinders, urging consumers to utilize the door delivery system. On the topic of fuel prices, she clarified that while prices of premium category petrol have been increased by OMCs, normal petrol and diesel prices remain unchanged.
Logistical Relief Measures
Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary of the Shipping Ministry, outlined logistical relief measures to support supply chains. He mentioned that the New Mangalore port has issued notifications for relief on ground and reefer charges for crude and LPG from March 14 to 31, aimed at easing transportation costs.
Government Advisories and Overall Measures
The government has issued advisories to prevent panic buying, encourage judicious use of LPG, and disseminate accurate information. These efforts are part of broader initiatives to ensure the availability of essential commodities and maintain normalcy across the country. Overall, authorities are taking all necessary steps to stabilize the situation and address public concerns effectively.
