SDTU Sounds Alarm Over LPG Shortage Crisis in Mangaluru District
The Social Democratic Trade Union (SDTU) has voiced serious concerns regarding a significant shortage of LPG at fuel stations across various parts of Mangaluru district, including the city itself. This scarcity is reportedly causing severe hardship to autorickshaw drivers and the broader working class, disrupting daily operations and livelihoods.
Price Hikes and Exploitation Alleged Amid Supply Crunch
SDTU Mangaluru city district president Rahiman Boliyar addressed reporters on Tuesday, detailing the dual challenges of LPG shortages and escalating prices. He emphasized that these issues are critically impacting autorickshaw drivers, who rely on LPG for fuel, as well as other workers dependent on affordable energy sources. Boliyar alleged that some gas stations have arbitrarily increased prices, exploiting drivers without any official circular to justify such hikes. Furthermore, he claimed that both domestic and commercial LPG cylinders are being sold at inflated rates, exacerbating the financial strain on vulnerable groups.
Government Urged to Address Supply Disruptions and Provide Relief
In response to the crisis, the SDTU leader called on the government to take immediate action. He urged authorities to address crude oil supply disruptions, which are linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis, by reducing taxes and ensuring an adequate supply of gas cylinders to stabilize the market. Additionally, Boliyar demanded that the government implement social responsibility relief measures to help mitigate the impact of rising gas prices on autorickshaw drivers, suggesting that targeted support could alleviate some of the economic pressures faced by this essential workforce.
The SDTU members have collectively urged the government to take note of these pressing issues and initiate corrective measures promptly. They stress that without intervention, the situation could worsen, leading to further economic distress for those already struggling with high costs and limited access to essential fuels.
