Maharashtra govt to document Marathi musical theatre history

Nagpur: The state government has decided to preserve nearly two centuries of Marathi musical theatre history by documenting its evolution across generations through a three-volume publication project worth Rs 1.28 crore.

Time capsule for theatre lovers

For theatre lovers and cultural enthusiasts, the initiative may well serve as a time capsule that attempts to preserve the songs, stories and stagecraft that once echoed through theatre halls and continue to hold nostalgic value even today.

Project approval and title

The tourism and cultural affairs department recently approved the series titled ‘Marathi Sangeet Rangbhoomi (Shabdaswar Lenyanchi Sangeet Natya Gauravgatha)’ as a part of the “Shatakottar Amrut Mahotsav” celebrations to mark 175 years of Marathi Sangeet Rangbhoomi.

Phased rollout over three financial years

The project will unfold over three financial years — from 2026-27 to 2028-29. The first volume, covering the period between 1911 and 1932, is scheduled for release in 2026-27, followed by the second volume documenting 1933 to 1959 and the third volume tracing developments from 1960 to 2020. Around 1,000 copies of each volume are expected to be printed.

The focus remains firmly on documenting the broader historical journey of Marathi musical theatre through an official state-backed publication.

Budget allocation

Nearly Rs 1.10 crore will be spent on editing, design, layout and printing, while Rs 18 lakh has been earmarked for publication ceremonies, with a dedicated launch planned for each volume.

Nodal authority

The Darshanika (State Gazetteer) Division, Mumbai, has been designated as the nodal authority to execute the project.
