The Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners Association has announced an increase in bus fares effective from June 13. The decision comes in response to the rising costs of diesel and vehicle maintenance, which have placed financial strain on bus operators.
Details of the Fare Revision
According to an official release from the association, the ticket fares will see a modest increase. For fares currently ranging between Rs 12 and Rs 20, passengers will pay an additional Re 1. For tickets priced above Rs 20, the hike will be Rs 2. The association clarified that the cess on fares has been adjusted in line with the government's rate notification.
Financial Distress Among Operators
The association highlighted that bus owners have been facing financial difficulties due to escalating operational costs. The revision is deemed necessary to sustain services and ensure the continued availability of public transport in the region.
Student Discounts Remain Unchanged
In a positive move for students, the Chalo Student Card program will continue to offer a 60% discount on fares. This concession aims to ease the burden on students who rely on buses for daily commuting.
Previous Fare Revision
The last adjustment in bus fares was made in July 2021. The current increase marks the first revision in nearly two years, reflecting the cumulative impact of rising input costs.
