Mumbai Grapples with Severe LPG Cooking Gas Shortage Amid Global Conflict
Mumbai is confronting a significant shortage of LPG cooking gas, a direct ripple effect from the escalating conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran. The disruption in the LPG supply chain has led to substantial delays, with waiting times for a refill now stretching from two to a staggering eight days after booking.
Commercial Sector Hit Hardest as Supply Halts
Dealers report that the supply of commercial LPG cylinders, essential for hotels and restaurants across the city, has been completely halted. This development threatens to push eateries into a severe crisis mode, potentially disrupting food services for countless residents and visitors.
"At least the domestic 14.2 kg cylinder is still available," explained a suburban dealer. "The supply of commercial LPG cylinders has been completely halted since Sunday. This will lead to a crisis for hotels and restaurants who purchase these large cylinders."
Panic Buying Emerges Amid New Government Regulations
Panic buying has become visibly widespread, with bookings multiplying since Monday morning. Families holding two cylinders have rushed to dealer outlets to secure refill bookings, fearing further shortages.
Compounding the issue, a new notification from the Union Ministry of Petroleum mandates that domestic consumers can only book a new refill 25 days after receiving a cylinder. "It is not like last week when you could book the next cylinder within a day or two," the dealer added, highlighting the sudden shift in availability.
Potential Black Market Risks and Price Increases
LPG dealers warn that hotels and other commercial establishments might be forced to purchase domestic cylinders from the black market, an illegal and dangerous practice. One dealer suggested, "I suggest the government charge hotels a higher price if it has to, but continue providing commercial cylinders."
This suggestion comes as prices for both commercial and domestic cylinders were increased by Rs 115 and Rs 60 respectively on Sunday, adding financial pressure to the logistical challenges.
On-the-Ground Impact in Mumbai Neighborhoods
In areas like Andheri, anxious customers flocked to LPG dealer outlets on Monday to make bookings. Some families even contemplated carrying home a cylinder themselves before stocks run out, illustrating the growing desperation among residents.
The situation underscores how international conflicts can have immediate, tangible effects on daily life in major cities like Mumbai, disrupting essential services and sparking economic concerns.
