Mysuru Milk Union Limited (MyMUL) has achieved a record daily milk procurement of 9.3 lakh litres in April 2025, marking an increase of 1.7 lakh litres compared to the same period last year. Despite the district experiencing a heatwave, the milk union has registered unprecedented milk production levels.
Factors Behind the Surge
Experts attribute this growth to effective disease prevention in cattle, consistent supply of livestock fodder, and a rise in dairy farming activities. Dr. C Nagaraj, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, highlighted that promotional measures by the government and strengthened veterinary services, including 10 mobile clinics, have played a crucial role. The distribution of mineral kits for deworming milking cows, timely vaccinations against lumpy skin disease and foot-and-mouth disease, and free fodder seed kits have boosted milk yields. Additionally, artificial insemination programs have increased the population of high-yielding cows, enhancing farmers' incomes.
Summer Production Defies Trends
Typically, MyMUL sees surplus milk production during the kharif and winter seasons due to cooler weather, with a decline as temperatures rise. However, this year, the union has maintained a steady increase in milk procurement during summer, receiving 9.3 lakh litres daily. If this trend continues, daily procurement is expected to reach 12 to 13 lakh litres after June, once the monsoon brings green fodder for milk producers.
Union's Operations and Initiatives
MyMUL procures milk from nearly one lakh active milk producers among 2.1 lakh registered shareholders across 1,090 primary milk cooperative societies in nine taluks of Mysuru district. Managing Director KN Suresh Naik noted that the union has also improved sales and marketing of its Nandini brand products. Timely disbursement of government incentives, prompt payment of milk procurement bills, and supply of nutritious fodder kits have all contributed to the production increase.
