The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has invited fresh tenders for the completion of balance works on National Highway 44 (NH-44) following the termination of previous contracts for the six-laning of the Bowenpally to Kallakal and Thondupally to Kothur corridor. The decision was taken after the contractor persistently failed to meet key construction milestones despite repeated interventions by the authority.
Background and Scope of Works
While maintenance works continue at the risk and cost of the defaulting contractor, NHAI has now invited bids for the balance works across three critical stretches. These include the 17 km Kallakal–Gundlapochampally stretch, the 10.031 km Gundlapochampally–Bowenpally section, and the 11.844 km Thondupally–Kothur section. The works will be executed through the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode to ensure timely completion. NHAI is seeking new contractors to take up the balance expansion works spanning approximately 21 km across the project corridors.
Engineering Details for Bowenpally-Kallakal Section
The engineering scope of the balance works in the Bowenpally-Kallakal section includes the construction of nine grade-separated structures. These comprise four flyovers, five vehicular underpasses, and one Railway Over Bridge (ROB). In addition to the main six-lane carriageway, the tender entails the construction of service roads and slip roads throughout the project area to facilitate smooth traffic flow.
Engineering Details for Thondupally-Kothur Section
The Thondupally-Kothur section includes the construction of eight underpasses as part of the six-laning works. These structures are designed to enhance safety and reduce congestion at key intersections.
Additional Works and Utility Shifting
The balance works also include the completion of remaining utility shifting, specifically Extra High Tension (EHT) lines and water pipelines. Tree translocation and associated works such as plantation, lighting, and foot over bridges along the Right of Way (RoW) are also part of the scope for both corridors.
Timeline and Commitment
The completion period for the balance works has been set at 18 months from the date of commencement. Through this expedited balance work tendering process, NHAI is committed to minimising further delays and enhancing regional connectivity through high-quality highway infrastructure. The fresh tenders are expected to attract experienced contractors capable of delivering the project on schedule.
