Six Pillars of Brain Health
According to Dr. Kumar, the six pillars of brain health are physical activity, cognitive stimulation, diet, nutrients and moderation, sleep, and social connection. He explained that lifelong learning and mental engagement help build cognitive reserve, stating, "Early age is for gathering information, later age is for processing it." He also stressed the importance of challenging the brain to prevent nerve degeneration: "It is very important to challenge the brain, to engage the brain, to prevent nerve degeneration."
Perspective on Dementia
Dr. Kumar offered an encouraging perspective on dementia, noting that individuals with high cognitive capacity may experience less severe symptoms even if dementia develops. He said, "If your cognitive capacity is at a very high level, even if dementia occurs, it will not be as bad." He further explained that enriching the brain during childhood and formative years can build resilience later in life.
Additional Factors Discussed
The conversation also covered the roles of sleep, blood pressure, diabetes, hearing, vision, purpose, and social relationships in brain health. Dr. Kumar addressed common myths about ageing, supplements, and processed foods, reinforcing that positive changes can be made at any stage of life to impact long-term well-being.
