PM Modi Touched by President Subianto's Gesture at Jakarta Airport

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday stated he was deeply moved by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's personal gesture of receiving him at the Jakarta airport. The two leaders are set to hold discussions aimed at further accelerating the momentum of their bilateral partnership across multiple sectors.

Warm Welcome and Ceremonial Honors

Upon his arrival in Jakarta, PM Modi was accorded a grand welcome. Indonesian Air Force fighter jets escorted the Prime Minister's aircraft as it entered Indonesian airspace, a ceremonial tradition. Additionally, he witnessed a traditional dance performance at the airport. In a post on X, PM Modi said, "Landed in Jakarta. I'm touched by President Prabowo Subianto's gesture of welcoming me at the airport. In 2018 we elevated our relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has benefitted our people."

Discussions and Cultural Engagement

During the visit, PM Modi and President Subianto will hold talks to inject fresh momentum into the partnership across diverse fields. The leaders will also jointly visit the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta, a UNESCO World Heritage site. PM Modi noted, "This will ensure closer cultural linkages between our nations. While in Indonesia, I also look forward to interacting with the Indian community."

Broader Three-Nation Tour

The Indonesia leg is the first part of PM Modi's three-nation visit from July 6 to 11, which will also include Australia and New Zealand. In his departure statement, the Prime Minister emphasized that the high-level engagement would capitalize on the robust momentum in India's relations with these key partners, expanding cooperation in strategic, economic, and people-centric sectors. He stated, "My visit to Indonesia and Australia in the Eastern and Southern Indian Ocean, respectively, followed by New Zealand, will further strengthen India's Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision, as well as our outlook towards a free and open Indo-Pacific." The MAHASAGAR framework—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions—serves as India's institutional blueprint for fostering security, stability, and inclusive growth across the maritime domain.

Economic and Strategic Ties

Indonesia is India's second-largest trading partner within ASEAN, with bilateral trade reaching USD 24.78 billion during the 2025-26 fiscal year. Over 130 Indian enterprises maintain active investments across various sectors of the Indonesian economy. Critical mineral cooperation is expected to be a key focus during the bilateral talks. Indonesia holds about 21% of the world's nickel reserves and is a top global producer of copper, bauxite, and tin. PM Modi's visit aims to structurally strengthen bilateral institutional mechanisms and trade channels in this vital domain.

Diaspora Expectations

Ahead of the Prime Minister's arrival, members of the Indian diaspora expressed hopes for deeper cooperation in mining, energy, infrastructure, and emerging technologies. This visit marks PM Modi's fourth trip to Indonesia and the first bilateral visit since the relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in May 2018.
