SIR Row Intensifies: DKS Refutes Allegations Amid NDA Charges
The controversy surrounding the Special Investigation Report (SIR) escalated on Monday as Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar strongly refuted allegations made by NDA leaders. The row, which has dominated political discourse, saw Shivakumar denying any wrongdoing and accusing the opposition of politicizing the matter.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar stated, "The SIR is a routine administrative document, and attempts to twist its contents are baseless. I have nothing to hide." His remarks came after BJP and other NDA allies demanded a thorough probe into the report, claiming it contained discrepancies related to land allotments during his tenure as a minister.
Monsoon Mayhem: Maharashtra Issues Travel Advisory
In a separate development, Maharashtra continues to reel under severe monsoon conditions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for several districts. The state government has advised against travel on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and other major routes due to landslides and waterlogging.
According to the IMD, parts of the Konkan region and western Maharashtra received over 200 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that several low-lying areas in Mumbai were inundated, disrupting local train services and road traffic.
"Commuters are urged to avoid non-essential travel between Mumbai and Pune until further notice," said a spokesperson for the Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority. Rescue teams have been deployed in affected areas, and schools in certain districts have been declared closed.
The monsoon fury has claimed at least four lives in the state over the past two days, with reports of houses collapsing in Raigad and Ratnagiri. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been mobilized for search and rescue operations.
Political Reactions and Impact
The SIR row has provided fresh ammunition to the opposition, with NDA leaders accusing the Congress-led Karnataka government of corruption. Union Minister and BJP leader Pralhad Joshi demanded a CBI investigation, stating, "The SIR exposes a scam that needs to be probed independently."
Shivakumar, however, dismissed these charges as "political vendetta" and maintained that the report had been misinterpreted. The Congress party has rallied behind him, with state party chief DK Shivakumar asserting that the allegations were part of a smear campaign ahead of upcoming by-elections.
Meanwhile, the monsoon crisis in Maharashtra has prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to offer central assistance. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde conducted an aerial survey of affected areas and announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
