A Bangladeshi transit passenger was arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi for allegedly hiding gold worth Rs 1.47 crore in a washroom flush. The incident occurred on June 29, 2026, when customs officials intercepted the passenger during a routine check.
How the Gold Was Discovered
Acting on a tip-off, customs officials searched the washroom near the transit area and found three oval-shaped yellow-coloured pouches wrapped inside a dark blue sock concealed in the flush-button cavity. The pouches contained gold in paste form, weighing approximately 2.4 kg, valued at Rs 1.47 crore.
During questioning, the passenger, a Bangladeshi national traveling from an undisclosed location, confessed to hiding the gold. According to customs officials, the passenger had arrived on a transit flight and planned to retrieve the gold later for smuggling into India.
Modus Operandi and Investigation
The passenger disclosed that he had concealed 'three oval-shaped yellow-coloured pouches, wrapped inside a dark blue sock, in the flush-button cavity of the washroom'. This method is typical of organized smuggling rings that use transit passengers to bypass security checks. Customs officials are investigating whether the passenger was part of a larger network.
The gold was seized under the Customs Act, 1962, and the passenger was arrested. He was produced before a local court and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigations are ongoing to identify other individuals involved in the smuggling attempt.
Previous Smuggling Cases at Delhi Airport
This incident adds to a growing list of gold smuggling attempts at Delhi airport. In 2025, customs seized over 500 kg of gold, with many cases involving transit passengers from Bangladesh, Dubai, and Southeast Asia. The use of washrooms and other hidden compartments is a common tactic to avoid detection.
Customs officials have heightened surveillance in transit areas and are using advanced scanning technology to detect concealed metals. Passengers found guilty of smuggling face strict penalties, including imprisonment and heavy fines.
Impact on Security Protocols
The incident has prompted a review of security protocols at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Authorities are considering deploying additional personnel in transit areas and installing more surveillance cameras. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has been alerted to monitor gold smuggling trends.
According to a customs spokesperson, 'We are committed to curbing smuggling activities and will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of the airport. This arrest demonstrates our vigilance and coordination with intelligence agencies.'
