Heavy Rains Lash Mumbai, Causing Widespread Waterlogging
Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall on June 24, 2024, leading to severe waterlogging in several low-lying areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the city, predicting more showers in the coming days. The downpour disrupted normal life, with roads submerged and traffic moving at a snail's pace.
Traffic Snarls and Commuter Woes
Major roads and junctions, including the Western Express Highway, Eastern Express Highway, and Sion-Panvel Highway, witnessed bumper-to-bumper traffic. Commuters reported spending over two hours traveling short distances. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deployed pumps to clear water from affected areas, but the situation remained grim in spots like Hindmata, King's Circle, and Milan Subway.
Local Train Services Hit
The lifeline of Mumbai, the local train network, faced delays and disruptions. On the Central Railway line, trains ran 10-15 minutes behind schedule due to waterlogging on tracks between Kurla and Ghatkopar. Western Railway also reported delays, especially on the Harbour line. Passengers complained of overcrowding and longer wait times.
Flight Operations Affected
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport reported that flight operations were normal, but some flights were delayed due to low visibility. The airport authorities advised passengers to check with their airlines for updates. Runway visibility dropped to 800 meters during the heaviest downpour.
Precautionary Measures
According to a BMC official, "We are monitoring the situation closely and have stationed rescue teams in vulnerable areas. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from waterlogged zones." The disaster management cell has been activated, and citizens can call 1916 for assistance. Schools and colleges in some areas declared a holiday as a precaution.
Weather Forecast
The IMD has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in Mumbai and its suburbs over the next 48 hours. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 30 degrees Celsius. The city has recorded 150 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, according to the IMD data.
Impact on Daily Life
The rains have also affected essential services. Several BEST buses were diverted due to waterlogging. In some areas, power supply was disrupted as a precautionary measure. The BMC has advised residents to stay indoors and avoid venturing into flooded areas.
