Passengers and bus operators in Ranchi have voiced serious concerns over the worsening condition of the government bus stand located near the Ranchi railway station, particularly with the monsoon season approaching. Commuters have described the building as dilapidated, with peeling plaster and damaged steps posing significant safety risks. Operators have noted that the premises frequently become waterlogged during rains, disrupting both bus and passenger movement.
Thousands of people use the bus stand daily to travel to various destinations, including Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Deoghar, and Hazaribag. Both commuters and drivers have stated that the neglect of infrastructure has persisted for years, with little improvement in basic amenities.
Bus Driver Highlights Structural Risks
Mansha Munda, a bus driver, pointed out that around 50 air-conditioned buses under the Jharkhand Drutgami Vatanukulit Deluxe Bus Sewa initiative operate from this stand to various districts. He expressed alarm over the building's condition, stating, "Despite being a prominent bus depot, the building looks like it might collapse at any moment. With the rains approaching, the risk of such an accident increases manifold. However, the government and the concerned department have not yet initiated any redevelopment work to upgrade the facility."
Waterlogging Disrupts Operations
Another driver, Dinesh Yadav, highlighted the severe impact of waterlogging on daily operations. "Waterlogging makes it difficult for buses to enter and exit the depot, affecting passengers, drivers, and staff alike. The inundation also damages vehicle parts, resulting in losses for bus operators," he said.
Commuters Flag Lack of Basic Amenities
Commuters have also raised concerns about the absence of functional drinking water facilities, toilets, and seating arrangements. Elderly passenger Prahlad Sahu noted that the approach to the ticket counter is unsafe and inaccessible. "Bricks on the concrete steps leading to the ticket counter have come out, indicating the need for immediate renovation. There is not even a handrail for support while ascending the steps, let alone a ramp for wheelchair access," he said.
Government Plans Revamp
In response to these concerns, Sunil Kumar, Principal Secretary of the Urban Development and Housing Department, stated, "The department is soon going to revamp three bus depots in the city: Khadgarha, the government bus stand, and the ITI bus stand. An estimated Rs 20 crore has been earmarked for the redevelopment of the government bus stand, and work will begin soon. After that, the depot will be transformed into a modern bus stand with all amenities, which will resolve the current issues."
