Akshaya Tritiya Ignites Gold and Silver Rush in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack
Jewellery showrooms across the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack experienced a significant surge in customer footfall on Akshaya Tritiya this Monday, with many opting to purchase gold and silver items despite prevailing high prices. The auspicious occasion brought families, young couples, and senior citizens to various outlets from early morning, creating a bustling atmosphere in retail spaces.
Symbolic Purchases Overcome Price Concerns
Jewellers reported that customers primarily focused on symbolic purchases rather than heavy jewellery, with many selecting small gold coins, lightweight ornaments, or silver articles. This trend provided a welcome relief to retailers who had faced weeks of subdued demand prior to the festival.
Sasmita Baral, a private sector employee who visited a store in Saheed Nagar with her parents, explained her perspective: "Prices are certainly on the higher side and fluctuate almost daily due to international developments, but Akshaya Tritiya comes once a year. Even if we buy a small coin, it feels auspicious and meaningful."
She emphasized that for her family, this annual tradition transcends mere investment considerations. "We buy gold on Akshaya Tritiya every year without fail. It's more about upholding our customs and beliefs than purely financial planning," Baral added.
Adjusting Budgets for Auspicious Purchases
Manas Das, a resident of Cuttack, shared similar sentiments while explaining his family's decision to purchase silver instead of gold this year. "The belief is that whatever you buy on this day will bring prosperity and good fortune. People are adjusting their budgets accordingly—some opting for silver, others for smaller gold items—but the important thing is participating in the tradition," he stated.
Retailers confirmed that festive sentiment largely outweighed concerns about high prices and geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing West Asia conflict that has contributed to volatility in precious metal rates globally.
Retailers Welcome Festive Boost
Rakesh Agarwal, owner of a jewellery store on Janpath in Bhubaneswar, expressed relief at the increased activity. "After watching nearly empty showrooms for the past several weeks, Akshaya Tritiya has brought smiles back to our faces. Most customers are understandably cautious with their spending, but the volume of walk-ins has been very encouraging," he said.
Agarwal noted that some customers were making bulk purchases in anticipation of the upcoming wedding season, adding another dimension to the day's transactions.
In Cuttack, Pradeep Sarap, another jeweller, reported steady sales throughout the day. "People may not be purchasing elaborate jewellery sets, but the strong belief attached to Akshaya Tritiya ensures consistent business. Even one gram of gold matters significantly on this auspicious occasion," he observed.
The combination of traditional beliefs, symbolic purchasing patterns, and adjusted consumer budgets created a vibrant marketplace in both cities, demonstrating how cultural practices continue to drive economic activity even amid challenging market conditions.
