Arunachal CM Pema Khandu Highlights MSME Sector's Role in India's Economic Growth
In a significant address in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu underscored the vital importance of the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector in driving India's economic expansion. Speaking at a national-level mega awareness program, Khandu detailed how this sector serves as a backbone for the nation's financial progress.
Policy Interventions and Economic Strengthening Since 2014
Chief Minister Khandu pointed out that since 2014, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, numerous policy measures have been implemented to fortify India's economy. A key focus has been on uplifting marginalized communities, particularly Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), through initiatives like the establishment of the National SC-ST Hub in 2016. This hub aims to empower these groups by integrating them into the mainstream economic framework.
MSME Sector's Extensive Reach and Impact
Citing national statistics, Khandu revealed that the MSME sector currently supports more than 7 crore enterprises across India, benefiting over 31 crore individuals. This vast network highlights the sector's crucial role in job creation and economic stability. However, he emphasized the need to accelerate growth momentum in the Northeastern region, with a special focus on Arunachal Pradesh, to ensure balanced regional development.
Government Procurement Policies for Inclusive Growth
Elaborating on central government initiatives, Khandu detailed a progressive procurement policy designed to foster inclusivity. He noted that 25% of total government procurement is mandated from MSMEs, with specific reservations: 4% for SC/ST entrepreneurs and 3% for women entrepreneurs. Khandu described this as a transformative approach that opens substantial opportunities for underrepresented groups, promoting equitable economic participation.
Awareness Program Objectives and Regional Coordination
The awareness program, organized by the National Small Industries Corporation Ltd (NSIC) under the Union Ministry of MSME in coordination with the Arunachal Pradesh government, aims to ensure that SC and ST entrepreneurs fully benefit from various central schemes. By enhancing awareness and accessibility, the initiative seeks to actively involve these entrepreneurs in the nation's economic progress, bridging gaps in regional development.
Khandu's remarks underscore a commitment to leveraging the MSME sector as a catalyst for inclusive and sustainable economic growth, particularly in frontier states like Arunachal Pradesh.
