He illustrated this point with a vivid thought experiment. Imagine being stranded on a remote island with a trillion dollars in a Swiss bank account. That money would be utterly useless. You would much prefer to have a can of soup instead. Similarly, owning all the Bitcoin in the world would not prevent you from starving. The real economy, Musk emphasizes, consists of tangible goods and essential services.
Labor as the Limiting Factor
Musk further elaborated that labor is the critical factor that limits the production of goods and services. He suggested that if we address this limitation, the traditional concept of an economy might lose its meaning. In such a scenario, scarcity would become a choice, perhaps applied only to unique items like specific pieces of art.
Musk's Vision of a Future Economy
Looking ahead, Musk paints an optimistic picture of the future. He predicts that within the next 10 to 20 years, advances in artificial intelligence will transform society. People may no longer need to save for retirement because healthcare, housing, and income could be abundantly provided.
He even offered a personal recommendation based on this belief. Musk advised against worrying too much about setting aside money for retirement. If his predictions hold true, saving for retirement could become irrelevant in the coming decades.
AI and Robotics Making Work Optional
Musk has consistently expressed similar views over the years. In 2022, he told Axel Springer that AI and robotics would address the labor limitation. By October 2025, he took to social media to expand on this idea. Musk wrote that AI and robots will eventually replace all jobs worldwide.
In this future, working would become optional. He compared it to growing your own vegetables instead of buying them from a store. It would be a choice rather than a necessity.
During an interview with U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, Musk shared even more details. He envisions a world where tens of billions of robots produce goods and provide services at minimal cost. Essentially, these offerings could become almost free for everyone.
