Government Mandates Increased LPG Production for Households Amid Global Supply Pressures
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced on Monday that it has directed oil refineries across India to ramp up the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This strategic move aims to divert additional output specifically for domestic household consumption, addressing critical shortages triggered by geopolitical disruptions in global fuel supplies.
Addressing LPG Availability Constraints
Facing significant constraints in LPG availability due to mounting global supply pressures, the ministry has prioritized ensuring a stable supply of cooking gas for households. The decision comes as part of broader contingency planning to manage distribution uncertainties in the volatile global energy market.
To prevent hoarding and black marketing, the government has implemented a key measure: increasing the minimum waiting period for booking a domestic LPG refill from 21 days to 25 days. This step is designed to promote equitable distribution of cylinders and maintain supply stability for all households.
Maximizing Production and Channeling Resources
Refineries have been instructed to maximize LPG recovery from their processes and channel all incremental production toward domestic consumption. This directive ensures that households receive uninterrupted access to essential cooking fuel, even as international markets face turbulence.
For non-domestic sectors, the government has outlined a clear prioritization strategy. Supplies from imported LPG will be reserved for essential services, including hospitals and educational institutions, to safeguard critical operations.
Committee Formed for Non-Domestic Allocation
A specialized committee comprising three executive directors from major oil marketing companies (OMCs) has been established to handle requests from other non-domestic users. This includes sectors such as restaurants, hotels, and various industries.
The panel will review representations from these entities and make decisions on supply allocations based on availability and priority requirements. This structured approach aims to balance needs across different sectors while maintaining focus on household security.
These comprehensive measures underscore the government's proactive stance in mitigating the impact of global energy market fluctuations, ensuring that Indian households remain shielded from supply disruptions in cooking gas.
