Union Minister Lalan Singh Praises Haryana's Dairy Leadership at Kurukshetra Livestock Exhibition
Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and Panchayati Raj, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, widely known as Lalan Singh, delivered a significant address at the 41st State-Level Livestock Exhibition in Kurukshetra, applauding Haryana's pivotal role in India's dairy sector. The minister emphasized that the state's indigenous cattle breeds have garnered international acclaim, solidifying its position as a frontrunner in milk production nationwide.
Haryana's Substantial Contribution to National Milk Output
During his speech as the chief guest on the second day of the event at KDB Mela Ground, Singh revealed that Haryana alone accounts for approximately 36% of India's total milk production. This translates to nearly 125.42 million tonnes, underscoring the state's critical importance to the country's dairy industry. The minister actively engaged with the exhibition, inspecting displays, interacting with livestock farmers, and witnessing a catwalk showcasing high-breed animals. He formally inaugurated the program by lighting the ceremonial lamp and was later honored with a traditional turban.
Call for Cooperative Societies and Export Growth
Singh urged the Haryana state government to establish cooperative societies in every village, arguing that such organizations are essential for maximizing benefits for livestock farmers. He stated that cooperatives could play a crucial role in enhancing milk exports, thereby boosting the economic prospects of rural communities. The minister noted that farmers from across Haryana brought superior breeds to the exhibition, reflecting their deep commitment and affection for animal husbandry.
Economic Impact and Government Initiatives
Highlighting the sector's broader significance, Singh pointed out that nearly 100 million people in India depend on livestock for their livelihoods, with the industry playing a substantial role in women's empowerment. He disclosed that the dairy sector currently represents a market valued at around Rs 19 lakh crore. The Central Government has implemented several schemes to foster development in this area, with more initiatives planned for the future.
Growth Under PM Modi's Leadership and Future Goals
Referencing progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration, Singh noted that India's milk production increased from 146.3 million tonnes in 2014 to about 248 million tonnes, making the country the world's largest milk producer. He added that a separate ministry for animal husbandry was created after 2014 to accelerate sectoral growth, and livestock farmers will be instrumental in achieving the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
Technological Advancements and Support Schemes
The Union minister detailed efforts to improve cattle breeds through genomic chips implanted in selected animals. These chips help monitor diseases and biological changes, supporting scientific research. He also highlighted the National Dairy Livestock Mission (NDLM), which provides free Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination to animals in Haryana. Additionally, around 70 mobile veterinary clinics are currently operational in the state.
Government Support for Farmers and Youth
BJP chief whip and MLA Ram Kumar Kashyap, also present at the event, remarked that countries with strong farmers also have robust political systems. He affirmed that both state and central governments are continuously working to uplift farmers and livestock rearers through various year-round schemes. Kashyap added that dairy units can be started with 1, 4, or 10 animals, with subsidies ranging from 25% to 90% under different programs. Special provisions have been made to provide loans to youth for starting employment-oriented ventures, further supporting economic development in the sector.
