Howrah is set to witness a major beautification project along the Hooghly River, as a 60-foot ashtadhatu Durga idol and a structure called 'Kolkata Eye' will be constructed at Ramkrishnapur Ghat. The initiative follows instructions from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and aims to enhance the spiritual and aesthetic appeal of the area.
Project Details and Features
Howrah North MLA and Minister of State for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Umesh Rai announced the plan after inspecting Ramkrishnapur and other ghats on Thursday evening. The project includes lightning protection systems and seating arrangements for visitors. Additionally, two giant metal bows will be installed on either side of the Durga idol framework.
Rai stated that incense would be lit daily, and priests along with other staff would be appointed for regular worship at the site. The project is a joint effort between the Kolkata Port Trust and the state government, with a target completion before Durga Puja. Rai expressed optimism that Prime Minister Narendra Modi might visit the site once the work is finished.
Budget and Scope
The beautification drive extends beyond Ramkrishnapur Ghat to cover every ghat in Howrah, Belur, and Bally. An initial allocation of Rs 1.8 crore has been made, with the budget expected to increase as the project progresses. The tender process has already been completed, according to Rai.
Senior engineers from the Kolkata Port Trust, Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), and Howrah Municipal Corporation accompanied Rai during the inspection, ensuring technical oversight and coordination.
This project is part of broader efforts to revitalize the Hooghly riverfront and promote cultural tourism in the region.
