India is estimated to have produced a record 376 million tonnes (MT) of foodgrains in the 2025-26 crop year, marking a 5.3% increase from the 357 MT reported in the previous year. The agriculture ministry released the latest crop production estimates on Wednesday.
Preparing for El Nino Risks
For the 2026-27 crop year, the ministry is gearing up to minimize the impact of El Nino on the sowing season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted 'below normal' monsoon rainfall amid the growing risk of El Nino, a climatic phenomenon invariably associated with weak monsoons in India.
Historical records indicate that such conditions have reduced output of key Kharif crops, including paddy and maize, by more than 10% in 77 and 65 districts, respectively, across various states in India.
National Conference on Kharif Crops
Beginning Thursday, the ministry will organize a two-day national conference chaired by Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The conference will focus on addressing El Nino risks, climate-resilient agriculture, natural farming, pulses and oilseeds production, digital agriculture, finance, and risk management.
The government aims to ensure food security and stabilize agricultural output despite climatic challenges. Farmers and stakeholders are advised to adopt recommended practices to mitigate potential losses.
