Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced that India's Green Hydrogen Mission has attracted major investments from Japan, marking a significant step in the country's clean energy transition. The initiative, spearheaded under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to build a robust and future-ready ecosystem for green hydrogen production and utilization.
Japanese Investments in Green Hydrogen
Joshi described the mission as a key driver for sustainable development, with Japanese companies showing keen interest in partnering with Indian firms. The investments are expected to boost India's capacity to produce green hydrogen, which is produced using renewable energy sources and emits no carbon dioxide.
The minister highlighted that the collaboration would leverage Japan's advanced technology and India's large-scale renewable energy potential. This partnership is aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which targets 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production by 2030.
Strategic Importance for Energy Security
India's Green Hydrogen Mission is crucial for reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. Joshi noted that the Japanese investments would accelerate the development of electrolysers, storage infrastructure, and fuel cell technology.
According to government estimates, the mission could attract over ₹8 lakh crore ($100 billion) in investments by 2030, with significant contributions from international partners like Japan. The collaboration is also expected to create thousands of jobs in the renewable energy sector.
Government's Commitment to Clean Energy
Joshi reiterated the government's commitment to making India a global hub for green hydrogen production and export. The mission includes incentives for manufacturing electrolysers and green hydrogen projects, as well as pilot projects for hydrogen blending in natural gas pipelines.
The minister emphasized that the Japanese investments are a testament to India's growing attractiveness as a destination for clean energy investments. He added that the partnership would also enhance bilateral ties between India and Japan in the energy sector.
With the Green Hydrogen Mission gaining momentum, India is poised to become a leader in the global green hydrogen economy, contributing to climate goals while ensuring energy security.
