Indore: Madhya Pradesh Paschim Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Company Limited recorded a peak power demand of 681 megawatts (MW) in Indore city on Tuesday, marking the highest consumption in a single day in the month so far. This development follows a record-breaking month of May, during which the city's peak electricity demand hit an all-time high of 748 MW on May 25.
Heatwave Drives Unprecedented Demand
According to officials, the surge in power demand was driven by a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures consistently ranging between 41 degrees Celsius and 43 degrees Celsius in May. The power demand remained above 700 MW even at midnight on several days in May, a period when industrial and commercial requirements typically drop by 50% and 95% respectively. This highlights the unprecedented domestic cooling loads, as residents relied heavily on air conditioners and fans to cope with the extreme heat.
Proactive Measures by Western Discom
Western Discom managing director Anoop Kumar Singh stated that capacity expansion works on grids, transformers, conductors, and cables were proactively executed during February and March to ensure uninterrupted supply during these peak periods. These measures were aimed at strengthening the infrastructure to handle the heightened demand and prevent outages.
The company continues to monitor the situation closely and has deployed additional teams to address any technical issues promptly. With the heatwave persisting, power demand is expected to remain elevated in the coming days.
