Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) chairman Srinivas has stated that increasing ticket prices is unavoidable if the rates of petrol and diesel continue to rise. He made these remarks on Thursday, highlighting the financial strain on the state-run transport corporation due to escalating fuel costs.
Fuel Price Impact on KSRTC
Srinivas explained that fuel expenses constitute a major portion of KSRTC's operational costs. With petrol and diesel prices climbing steadily, the corporation is finding it challenging to maintain current fare structures without incurring losses. He emphasized that the only viable option to sustain services is to revise ticket prices upward, a move that would affect millions of daily commuters across Karnataka.
Difference of Opinion on Tumakuru Renaming
In a separate matter, Srinivas expressed disagreement with his Congress party colleague and Home Minister G Parameshwara regarding the proposal to rename Tumakuru as Bengaluru North. While Parameshwara had supported the idea, Srinivas argued that such a change could lead to administrative confusion and erode the historical identity of the region. He urged for a more consultative approach before any decision is finalized.
The KSRTC chairman's comments come amid rising public concern over inflation and transportation costs. The corporation is expected to hold discussions with state government officials to explore alternatives, including subsidies or tax relief on fuel, to avoid burdening passengers.
