Pest Infestation Threatens Coffee Plantations in Chikkamagaluru
Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka has recorded nearly 60% deficit rainfall, with even the typically wet Malnad region experiencing a significant rain shortfall. This prolonged dry spell, combined with intermittent light showers and warm weather, has created ideal conditions for pest outbreaks in coffee estates, worrying local growers.
Impact of Weather on Pest Spread
The erratic weather pattern—long dry periods followed by brief rains—has weakened coffee plants, making them more susceptible to pests such as the coffee berry borer and leaf rust. According to agricultural experts, the current conditions are unprecedented for the region, which usually receives adequate rainfall.
Growers Express Concern
Local coffee growers have reported increased pest activity and are concerned about potential yield losses. “The situation is alarming. We are seeing pest infestations earlier than usual, and if it continues, it could severely impact our harvest,” said a grower from the region. The district administration has been urged to provide assistance and advisory services.
Government and Expert Response
The Karnataka government has been alerted, and the Coffee Board is expected to issue guidelines for pest management. Experts recommend integrated pest management strategies, including biological controls and careful monitoring, to mitigate damage. However, without sufficient rain, recovery remains uncertain.
