Uttar Pradesh has transformed from a 'Bimaru' state into one of the country's fastest-growing economies, driven by advancements in infrastructure, law and order, and support for small industries, according to MSME minister Rakesh Sachan. He made these remarks during TOI's 'Defining 9 Years of Transformation' interview on Thursday.
MSME Growth and Employment
Sachan noted that UP, once synonymous with unemployment and migration, is now attracting investors from across India and abroad. The state houses approximately 96 lakh MSME units, representing nearly 15% of the nation's MSMEs, and providing employment to millions. 'MSMEs are not just industries; they are the economic backbone of poor families,' he emphasized.
Infrastructure Development
The minister highlighted that expressways, highways, improved rail services, and expanding air connectivity have strengthened the state's economy. Key projects include the Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, the 596-km-long Ganga Expressway, and the upcoming Jewar airport.
Law and Order Boosts Investor Confidence
Sachan stated that better law and order under the current government has increased investor confidence. 'Earlier, industries were uncertain about safety. Today, investors feel secure and are coming to UP with confidence,' he said.
One District One Product (ODOP) Scheme
Referring to the ODOP scheme launched in 2018, Sachan said it revived traditional products from all 75 districts, including Banarasi sarees, Kannauj perfumes, Saharanpur woodcraft, Firozabad glasswork, Lucknow chikankari, and Bhadohi carpets. Artisans and entrepreneurs received training, subsidies, loans, and marketing support to expand businesses and reach global markets.
ODOP 2.0 and One District One Cuisine
The government is now preparing to launch 'ODOP 2.0', which will assist existing businesses looking to expand. Additionally, the 'One District One Cuisine' initiative aims to promote UP's traditional food products. District-level committees have been formed to identify famous local dishes for promotion. The scheme has received cabinet approval with a budget of Rs 150 crore, expected to generate employment and take UP's regional food culture to national and international markets.
