Hyderabad's 'Gold Man' Targeted in Major Tax Raid Under New Law
In a significant enforcement action, the Income Tax Department in Hyderabad has seized gold worth approximately ₹1 crore from Yadgiri Chinna Goud, popularly known as 'Dargah Chinna Pahilwan'. This case marks a pivotal moment as it represents the first warrant issued anywhere in India under Section 247 of the newly enacted Income Tax Act, 2025, which replaced the 1961 legislation on April 1.

During the raid, officials discovered a total of 900 grams of gold in Chinna Pahilwan's possession. Of this, 700 grams was identified as unaccounted wealth and subsequently seized, while approximately 150 to 200 grams was returned for personal use. Authorities reported that the individual could not satisfactorily explain the source of income for these ornaments, leading to the confiscation.
The investigation was initiated based on social profiling, with tax officials monitoring Chinna Pahilwan's television appearances and YouTube interviews before taking action. During questioning, he admitted that the gold was unaccounted and claimed its value to be around ₹1 crore, attributing it to rental income and land dealings. Authorities also investigated the finances of his family members, noting that one relative is a tech professional based abroad, while another reported income from operating a girls' paying guest hostel.
Chinna Pahilwan has cultivated a strong public image as the 'Telangana gold man', known for his roles as a businessman, politician, and local figure in the Gachibowli area. His persona is heavily centered on wearing substantial gold jewelry, and he maintains an active presence on social media, featuring in 'home tour' videos that showcase his properties and participating in local events and festivals.
Context and Precedents in Similar Cases
This case is notable as Chinna Pahilwan is the third individual dubbed a 'gold man' to come under the Income Tax Department's scanner. Earlier, similar seizures were made from Telangana Hockey president Konda Vijay Kumar. In another instance, most of the ornaments worn by P Suresh Kumar, alias Surya Bhai, were found to be coated or made of rhodium and copper, highlighting a pattern of targeting individuals with ostentatious displays of wealth.
Previously, such enforcement actions were taken under Section 132 of the old Income Tax Act. The shift to Section 247 of the new Act underscores the government's enhanced focus on combating tax evasion and unaccounted assets, particularly in cases involving high-profile individuals with conspicuous lifestyles.
