Income Tax Department Launches 24/7 Control Room in Assam to Monitor Election Black Money
In a decisive move to ensure electoral integrity, the Income Tax department has established a round-the-clock control room in Assam to combat the use of black money during the upcoming Assembly elections. This initiative, announced in an official statement on Tuesday, aims to assist the Election Commission in curbing illicit financial activities that could influence the democratic process.
Vigilance on Unaccounted Assets
The Directorate of Income Tax (Investigation), North Eastern Region, based in Guwahati, will maintain strict surveillance over the movement of unaccounted cash, bullion, precious metals, and other valuables suspected to be used for electoral purposes. This heightened vigilance will be enforced throughout the period of the Model Code of Conduct, ensuring compliance with election regulations.
The control room, operational at the Aayakar Bhawan in Guwahati, has been equipped with multiple communication channels to facilitate public reporting. Citizens can contact the authorities via mobile or WhatsApp at 9401085214 and 9181324184, landline at 0361-2340396, or email at ssamelections26[at]gmail[dot]com. These channels are designed to encourage the reporting of credible information regarding suspicious activities linked to the elections.
Anonymous Reporting Encouraged
The department has emphasized the confidentiality of informants, stating that personal details such as names or identities are not required to be disclosed. However, it is crucial that the information provided is credible and actionable to enable effective intervention. This approach aims to protect whistleblowers while ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
"Informants are not required to disclose personal details such as name or identity. However, it is essential that the information shared is credible and actionable," the statement highlighted, urging the public to utilize the provided communication channels.
Election Timeline and Operational Scope
Elections for the 126-member Assam Assembly are scheduled for April 9, with vote counting set for May 4. The control room will remain functional until the completion of the entire election process, providing continuous monitoring and response capabilities to address any financial irregularities.
This proactive measure underscores the government's commitment to transparent and fair elections, targeting the misuse of black money that could undermine democratic principles. By involving citizens in the vigilance effort, the Income Tax department aims to foster a collaborative environment for safeguarding electoral integrity in Assam.
