Indian Coast Guard Commissions New Fast Patrol Vessel 'Achal'

The Indian Coast Guard has achieved a significant milestone in enhancing its operational capabilities with the commissioning of ICGS Achal, the latest vessel in the new-generation Adamya-class fast patrol vessel series. The ceremony took place at Goa Shipyard Ltd on Saturday.

Key Features of ICGS Achal

Named 'Achal', which translates to 'firm', this fifth fast patrol vessel boasts 60% indigenous content. It holds dual-class certification from both the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). With a top speed of 27 knots, the vessel is designed to bolster coastal security and protect offshore assets.

The project, built at a cost of Rs 473 crore, strengthens the Indian Coast Guard and aligns with the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It is expected to generate employment and empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), according to the defence ministry.

Operational Roles

ICGS Achal symbolizes the Coast Guard's steadfast commitment to safeguarding national maritime interests, protecting life at sea, and ensuring the security of India's maritime frontiers. The vessel will undertake a wide spectrum of maritime operations, including:

  • Coastal and offshore surveillance
  • Interdiction operations
  • Search and rescue (SAR) missions
  • Anti-smuggling operations
  • Marine pollution response

Commissioning Ceremony

The ship was formally commissioned into service by A Anbarasu, Additional Secretary & Director General (Acquisition), Ministry of Defence. The event was attended by IG Tekur Sashi Kumar, Commander of the Coast Guard Region (North-West), along with senior officials from central and state governments, as well as shipyard representatives.

Incorporating over 50% indigenous components, the vessel underscores India's growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and supports the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make-in-India initiatives.
