IndiGo Hit with ₹13.28 Lakh GST Penalty, Airline to Challenge Order
IndiGo to Contest ₹13.28 Lakh GST Penalty Order

India's largest airline, IndiGo, has been issued a significant financial penalty related to Goods and Services Tax (GST) payments. The carrier, operated by InterGlobe Aviation, has stated it will legally challenge the order.

Details of the GST Penalty and IndiGo's Response

The Office of the Assistant Commissioner of State Tax, Excise and Taxation Department in Punjab has imposed a penalty of ₹13,28,255 on IndiGo. This demand is for the financial year 2021-22. The airline was formally notified of this decision, which includes both the GST demand and the accompanying penalty.

In a strong rebuttal, IndiGo has labeled the order as "erroneous." The company, which holds the largest market capitalization in the Indian aviation sector, believes it has a robust case. This confidence is backed by advice from external tax experts. Consequently, IndiGo has confirmed it will contest the penalty before the appropriate legal authority.

Financial Impact and Operational Context

Despite the substantial penalty amount, IndiGo has clarified that this development is not expected to materially affect its financial health. The airline assured stakeholders that the penalty will have no major impact on its financial position, ongoing operations, or other business activities.

This tax notice arrives shortly after IndiGo navigated a period of operational turmoil. Earlier this month, the airline experienced widespread disruptions, leading to hundreds of flight cancellations and delays due to a mix of weather and operational issues. These events stranded numerous passengers across the country.

Stabilisation and Preparations for Holiday Season

IndiGo has since reported that its services have stabilised. On Wednesday, the airline asserted it is fully prepared to manage the high travel demand anticipated during the upcoming holiday season. As a proactive measure to ensure network stability following the recent disruptions, IndiGo has implemented a 10% reduction in its winter flight schedule. This move complies with a directive from the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

With weather forecasts predicting a harsh winter ahead, the airline has reiterated its commitment to service reliability. IndiGo promises to take all necessary steps to minimise potential travel delays for its passengers as it continues to expand both its dominant domestic network and its growing international footprint.
