The central government has increased the minimum support price (MSP) for onions by Rs 3.50, fixing it at Rs 15 per kilogram, according to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This development comes as farmers continue their protests across the state.
Cabinet Meeting Highlights
Speaking to the media after the weekly cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Fadnavis stated that the state government had requested a meeting with the Centre to discuss the issue, and the meeting is scheduled for Wednesday. He dismissed the opposition's protests as mere "photo opportunities," asserting that the Mahayuti government remains sensitive to farmers' concerns.
Criticism of Opposition
The Chief Minister criticized the opposition, labeling their protests as politically motivated. "Some people are playing politics and creating photo opportunities. The onion price during their tenure is no secret. We will try to find a long-term solution. This is a 100% political protest (by the opposition). Those who do not shed tears while cutting onions are now trying to shed tears," he said.
The MSP hike aims to provide relief to onion growers who have been demanding better prices. The state government is also exploring long-term measures to stabilize onion prices and support farmers.
