80 Local Trains Cancelled Daily: Mumbai's WR Faces 30-Day Disruption for Sixth Line Work
80 WR Local Trains Cancelled Daily for Borivali-Kandivali Work

Mumbai's lifeline, the Western Railway (WR) suburban network, is bracing for significant disruptions over the next month. Starting from the night of December 20/21, a major 30-day infrastructure block has been initiated to facilitate crucial work for the new sixth railway line between Borivali and Kandivali. This essential upgrade will force the cancellation of up to 80 local train services daily, impacting lakhs of daily commuters.

Scale and Schedule of the Disruption

The extensive block period is set to last until January 18, 2026. While the primary engineering work will be conducted during night hours between 11 pm and 4:30 am to minimize peak-hour chaos, the ripple effects will be felt throughout the day. The initial phase from December 20/21 to December 25/26 will see nightly blocks. However, the suspension of the fifth line and diversion of services will affect late-night and early morning trains.

Officials have provided a day-wise breakdown of the impact. On the first night, a limited number of cancellations are planned. However, from December 22 to December 25, a substantial 94 local trains per day (equally split between up and down services) will be affected. December 26 will witness a significant daytime impact with 87 local trains slated for cancellation to allow for follow-up system adjustments.

Nature of the Work and Commuter Impact

The project is not a minor repair but a comprehensive infrastructure overhaul. According to WR Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek, the work involves complex operations including track slewing and the insertion and removal of multiple crossovers in the Borivali-Kandivali section. Major interventions in engineering, signalling, and overhead equipment are also part of the plan, making train regulation unavoidable for safety reasons.

The consequences for commuters will be multifaceted:

  • Daily cancellation of up to 80 suburban locals.
  • Several trains will be short-terminated or short-originated.
  • Many services will be rescheduled or diverted.
  • Some trains will skip their scheduled halt at Borivali station, severely affecting peak-hour travel plans.
  • Residual daytime delays and cancellations are expected on days following the night blocks.

Official Advice and Long-Term Vision

Recognizing the inevitable inconvenience, railway authorities have issued a clear advisory. Commuters are strongly urged to plan their journeys in advance. They must pay close attention to station announcements and consistently refer to updated timetables displayed at stations and on official WR communication platforms.

WR officials have emphasized that the temporary pain is for long-term gain. The sixth line project is a critical component of WR's long-term capacity augmentation plan designed to ease chronic congestion on one of Mumbai's busiest suburban corridors. While the coming weeks will demand patience and planning from the city's commuters, the promised outcome is a more robust and efficient railway network for the future.
