Ahmedabad witnessed two significant industrial fires between Friday night and Saturday, resulting in one fatality at a plastic-waste unit in Odhav. A separate blaze at a chemical godown in Narol produced heavy smoke but no injuries.
Odhav Fire Claims Life
The fatal incident occurred around 11:50 PM on Friday at Ambika Plastic, situated behind the Odhav fire station near Jay Chemical. Flames rapidly consumed plastic waste stored within an Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation tin-roof shed and an adjacent open plot.
The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) dispatched 13 vehicles, including water tankers and specialized bowsers from Nikol, Naroda, Maninagar, and Jashodanagar. During cooling operations at approximately 1 AM, firefighters discovered a body amidst the debris.
The victim was identified as 42-year-old Pratab Thakore, a resident of Modasa who worked at the unit. His remains were transported via a 108 ambulance to a local hospital for postmortem examination. Fire crews remained at the scene until early Saturday to prevent re-ignition of the plastic material.
Narol Chemical Godown Fire
Later on Saturday, a second industrial fire erupted at Godown 55 in Balaji Estate on the Narol-Isanpur Road. Chemical substances stored inside caught fire, generating dense smoke that initially hampered firefighting efforts.
Teams from the Aslali fire station arrived with mini fire appliances and specialized Gajraj vehicles, quickly bringing the situation under control. Fire officials confirmed no injuries in the Narol incident. The cause of both fires and the extent of financial losses remain under investigation.
