Amazon India Expands Odisha Operations with Major Delivery Network Launch
Amazon India has significantly enhanced its logistics footprint in Odisha with the launch of 52 new last-mile delivery stations across the state. This strategic expansion, announced on Thursday, targets key cities such as Balangir, Cuttack, Jharsuguda, and Puri, building upon the company's growing operations network that has already transformed delivery efficiency and local economic participation.
Infrastructure Backbone and Delivery Speed Improvements
The foundation of Amazon's Odisha infrastructure is the Bhubaneswar fulfilment centre, situated at Giringaput, which boasts a substantial storage capacity of 0.25 million cubic feet. Since its inauguration last year, this facility has been pivotal in streamlining operations. According to a company statement, the expanded setup has dramatically accelerated delivery times, making same-day or next-day deliveries five times faster by positioning inventory closer to customers.
Boosting Local Sellers and Employment Opportunities
The impact of Amazon's investment extends beyond logistics. Since the fulfilment centre's launch, the company has successfully onboarded over 1,000 new local sellers from various regions across Odisha, providing a significant boost to small and medium businesses. The facility currently houses lakhs of products across diverse categories, enabling quicker order processing and dispatch.
Customer adoption has seen a steady rise in districts including Angul, Balangir, Cuttack, Ganjam, Jharsuguda, Mayurbhanj, and Rourkela. Strong demand is particularly noted in mobile phones, consumer electronics, beauty products, and grocery items.
Strategic Focus and Long-Term Investment
Karan Chugh, Director of Operations at Amazon India, emphasized the company's commitment to enhancing proximity to both sellers and customers. "Last year, we invested over Rs 2,000 crore to build and operate India's fastest, safest, and most reliable operations network. With our expanded network in Odisha, we are bringing wider things closer to customers," Chugh stated.
This expansion in Odisha is a key component of Amazon's long-term investment strategy in India. Since 2010, the company has invested nearly $40 billion in the country. The growing operations network in Odisha is already generating thousands of employment opportunities across various roles in fulfilment, sorting, and delivery, contributing to local economic development.
