Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Department Intensifies Kharif Season Preparations

The Andhra Pradesh agriculture department has significantly ramped up its preparations for the upcoming Kharif season, focusing on ensuring ample fertilizer availability while maintaining rigorous monitoring systems to curb any potential misuse. According to agriculture director Dr. Manazir Jeelani Samoon, the state has projected a requirement of 16.28 lakh metric tonnes of fertilizers for the Kharif period. Of this total, approximately 7.31 lakh metric tonnes, which accounts for about 45%, are already in stock, providing a solid foundation for the season.

Detailed Fertilizer Stock Analysis and Strategic Planning

For urea specifically, the state needs 6.68 lakh metric tonnes, with 2.15 lakh metric tonnes currently available, representing 34% of the requirement. Officials are closely observing various global and domestic factors that could impact supply, including the ongoing West Asia conflict, potential raw material shortages, and climatic influences such as El Niño. To address these challenges, the department is committed to a scientific and rational distribution approach for fertilizers, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and effectively.

Strict enforcement measures have been promised against any irregularities in procurement or sales, with the department vowing to take decisive action to maintain integrity in the supply chain. This proactive stance builds on the successes achieved during the Rabi 2025 season, where despite a 36% increase in cropped area, urea consumption rose by only 3%, demonstrating significant improvements in efficiency.

Efficiency Gains and Enforcement Actions from Rabi 2025

Dr. Samoon highlighted that the average urea usage per hectare dropped sharply from 513 kg over the past three years to 338 kg in Rabi 2025, marking a substantial 34% reduction. This achievement was made possible through continuous surveillance, extensive awareness campaigns, and coordinated efforts with vigilance, police, and revenue departments. Surveillance teams actively monitored the supply chains, effectively preventing illegal hoarding and diversion of fertilizers.

Enforcement activities were intensified during this period, with 18,563 fertilizer samples tested in 2025. Of these, 413 samples failed to meet quality standards, leading to significant regulatory actions. Authorities detained fertilizers valued at Rs 58.40 crore and confiscated stocks worth Rs 6.45 crore. The crackdown resulted in 84 license suspensions and 18 cancellations in 2025, alongside the filing of 34 criminal cases, which is the highest number ever recorded in the state.

Sustaining Productivity Through Balanced Fertilizer Usage

The department also ensured balanced fertilizer usage across various crops, including maize, cotton, and redgram, even as crop areas expanded. Officials emphasized that continued vigilance and ongoing farmer awareness initiatives will be crucial for sustaining productivity and enhancing resource efficiency in the long term. By learning from past successes and addressing current challenges, the Andhra Pradesh agriculture department aims to support farmers and boost agricultural output during the Kharif season.
