Bajaj Auto Unveils 2026 Dominar 400 with Strategic Engine Downsizing
In a significant move aimed at enhancing market accessibility, Bajaj Auto India has officially launched the new 2026 Dominar 400, now equipped with a 350cc engine. This strategic update sees the motorcycle transition from a 373cc to a newly developed 349cc powerplant, a change that places it in a lower tax bracket and substantially reduces its price point.
Engine Specifications and Performance Enhancements
The heart of the updated Dominar 400 is its liquid-cooled, single-cylinder 349cc engine, which delivers 40.6 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 33.2 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm. This represents a slight increase of 0.6 hp in peak power compared to the previous model, albeit with a reduction of 1.8 Nm in peak torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox featuring an assist and slipper clutch, ensuring smooth gear shifts and enhanced control.
Notably, the peak power is now generated 200 rpm higher, while peak torque arrives 1,000 rpm later in the rev range. Despite the downsizing, the motorcycle has shed 3 kg, resulting in a kerb weight of 190 kg, which contributes to improved agility and handling.
Tax Benefits and Pricing Strategy
The reduction in engine displacement from 373cc to 349cc is a calculated move that allows the Dominar 400 to fall into the 18 percent tax bracket, a significant drop from the previous 40 percent bracket. This tax advantage translates directly into cost savings for consumers.
Priced at Rs 2.04 lakh (ex-showroom), the updated model marks a substantial price reduction of Rs 37,000 compared to its predecessor. This aggressive pricing strategy is designed to make the touring-focused motorcycle more accessible to a broader segment of riders in India.
Design and Features Remain Unchanged
Beyond the engine update, Bajaj Auto has retained all other aspects of the Dominar 400. The motorcycle continues to be available in its signature green and black color options, with no alterations to its equipment list or aesthetic design.
Key features include full LED lighting, a split digital instrument console, dual-channel ABS, USD front forks, and a rear monoshock. Touring-oriented elements such as a windscreen, hand guards, luggage mounts, and a USB charging port are also standard, underscoring the bike's long-distance capabilities.
Brand Vision and Market Impact
Sarang Kanade, President of the Motorcycle Business Unit at Bajaj Auto Ltd., emphasized the brand's commitment to its touring heritage. "Dominar has always stood for our touring DNA - powerful, capable, and built for the long road," he stated. "With the new Dominar 400 with 350cc engine, we are staying true to that promise while making it significantly more accessible. Riders get the same Dominar experience they love, but now with a much lower cost of ownership, including meaningful savings. This is a decisive step towards democratizing touring and sports motorcycling in India."
This launch reflects Bajaj Auto's strategic shift towards balancing performance with affordability, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape in India's premium motorcycle segment. By leveraging tax efficiencies and maintaining core features, the company aims to attract both existing enthusiasts and new riders seeking a capable touring machine without the premium price tag.
