Oil Marketing Companies in Bengal Request LPG Data to Tackle Supply Concerns

In response to growing fears over potential supply disruptions, oil marketing companies (OMCs) operating in West Bengal have issued a directive to LPG distributors across the state. They are required to submit comprehensive data detailing priority and non-priority commercial customers, along with their specific consumption patterns. This strategic move is designed to preemptively address any shortages and ensure a stable supply chain for essential sectors.

High-Level Meeting Convenes to Explore Mitigation Strategies

A critical high-level meeting was convened on Wednesday, orchestrated by the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), which serves as the state-level convener for oil and gas operations. The gathering brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Bengal Gas, and IOC Adani. The primary objective was to assess current demand dynamics and identify viable alternative supply options, particularly for non-priority commercial consumers such as hotels and restaurants.

Jitendra Kumar, the state-level coordinator of IOC, chaired the meeting, which was also attended by K M Thakur, the chief general manager (LPG). Thakur emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "The objective is to assess demand and find alternative supply options for non-priority commercial consumers, like hotels and restaurants." He further revealed that CNG operators have been formally requested to step in and supply gas to these commercial establishments, marking a significant shift in resource allocation.

CNG and PNG Identified as Key Alternatives for Commercial Use

To mitigate the risk of LPG shortages, authorities have pinpointed several regions where CNG supply can be effectively extended to commercial entities. These areas include Kalyani, Panagarh, Durgapur, and the Borjora industrial belt. In Kolkata, businesses may receive advisories to coordinate directly with Bengal Gas, the primary provider of piped natural gas (PNG), to secure their energy needs through this alternative channel.

Additionally, in a bid to optimize resource distribution, authorities have also sought detailed data on households currently utilizing PNG. An official involved in the discussions disclosed, "We may stop LPG supply there and divert it for commercial use." This potential reallocation underscores the proactive measures being considered to prioritize commercial sectors that are more vulnerable to supply chain interruptions.

Broader Context and Implications for the Region

The initiative comes against a backdrop of escalating global tensions, including conflicts in the Middle East such as the Israel-Iran war, which have raised concerns over oil supply routes like the Strait of Hormuz. While these international events are not directly linked to the local measures in Bengal, they highlight the broader volatility in energy markets that necessitates such contingency planning. By focusing on data-driven strategies and leveraging alternative energy sources like CNG and PNG, the OMCs aim to safeguard commercial operations and maintain economic stability in West Bengal amidst uncertain times.
