India's Electric Vehicle Sector Shows Resilience Amid Global Unrest
In the face of escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia, India's electric vehicle (EV) industry continues to demonstrate remarkable strength, maintaining robust sales momentum despite broader market uncertainties. The electric two-wheeler (E2W) segment, in particular, is poised to achieve record-breaking volumes this month, underscoring the sector's resilience and growth potential.
Record-Breaking Sales Momentum for Electric Two-Wheelers
With only a few days remaining in March 2026, E2W sales have already surged to 1.39 lakh units as of March 27, surpassing the 1.31 lakh units recorded in March 2025. At this accelerated pace, and bolstered by the typical year-end promotional efforts from manufacturers, monthly sales are projected to exceed the previous peak of 1.45 lakh units achieved during the festive season in October 2025. This impressive performance highlights the sustained consumer demand and strategic initiatives driving the market forward.
Manufacturers Ramp Up Efforts to Boost Demand
E2W manufacturers have intensified their demand-generation strategies, with several key players introducing special-edition models and leveraging high-visibility events such as the Indian Premier League (IPL) to attract buyers. Notably, Ola Electric, which has faced challenges with declining sales, has implemented aggressive pricing tactics. The company announced a starting price of Rs 49,999, along with benefits of up to Rs 50,000 across its portfolio, valid until March 31, 2026, in a bid to revitalize its market position.
Year-on-Year Growth and Market Leadership
For the fiscal year 2026, total E2W sales have grown by an impressive 17% year-on-year, reaching 1.35 million units compared to 1.15 million units in FY25. This growth has been supported by factors such as network expansion, new product launches, and attractive purchase schemes. TVS Motor Company, the segment leader, continues to widen its lead over competitors, having crossed the one lakh unit mark for the March 2026 quarter. Its full-year FY26 volumes have surpassed the 3 lakh milestone, reaching approximately 3.3 lakh units as of March 27, making it the first player to achieve this level in a single year. In FY25, TVS reported E2W sales of 2.38 lakh units.
Performance of Other Key Players
Bajaj Auto reported FY26 volumes of 2.76 lakh units, up from 2.31 lakh units in FY25, showing steady growth. Ather Energy maintained a strong trajectory, with FY26 volumes rising to about 2.3 lakh units, significantly higher than the 1.31 lakh units recorded in FY25. In contrast, Ola Electric experienced a decline, with volumes dropping to 1.61 lakh units in FY26 from 3.44 lakh units in FY25. Hero MotoCorp recorded a sharp surge in its E2W volumes, with sales rising nearly threefold to 1.39 lakh units in FY26 from 48,736 units in FY25, indicating a notable expansion in its electric offerings.
The sustained growth in India's EV sector, particularly in the E2W segment, reflects a broader shift towards sustainable mobility, even as global events create economic headwinds. With manufacturers continuing to innovate and compete, the market is set for further expansion in the coming years.
