Bengaluru PG Crisis: LPG Shortage Hits IT Corridor, Tenants Seek WFH Options

A severe commercial LPG shortage has begun to significantly impact paying guest (PG) accommodations across Bengaluru's bustling eastern IT corridor, creating a ripple effect that is disrupting daily life for thousands of migrant professionals. The scarcity of cooking gas cylinders is forcing PG owners to drastically reduce meal services, prompting widespread concern and leading many tenants to actively seek work-from-home arrangements from their employers to cope with the impending food crisis.

Meal Services Suspended Amid Fuel Scarcity

In key residential hubs such as Whitefield, Marathahalli, and Ashwath Nagar—areas densely populated with hundreds of migrant workers employed in nearby tech parks and multinational companies—PG operators are reporting critical shortages. The Whitefield PG Owners' Welfare Association has officially notified residents that lunch services will be suspended for several days, effective from March 13, due directly to the unavailability of LPG cylinders.

A Marathahalli-based PG owner, who is a member of the association, confirmed the escalating situation. "As of now, we have stock for only the next two days. If the supply issue persists, we may have no choice but to request some tenants to return to their hometowns, as managing food provisions will become virtually impossible," the owner stated in an interview.

Tenants Face Uncertainty and Disruption

Sai Kiran, a tenant residing in a PG in Ashwath Nagar, shared that residents have been formally alerted about potential meal disruptions stemming from the gas shortage. "Even in our office, management is taking note of employees who stay in PGs so that they can be prioritized for work-from-home options," he explained, highlighting how the crisis is extending into workplace policies.

Many migrant professionals staying in these accommodations express growing anxiety, citing that limited meals and the uncertainty over cooking gas availability are making it increasingly difficult to manage their daily routines and maintain productivity.

Operators Struggle with Supply Chain Issues

PG operators are facing immense challenges in securing gas cylinders from distributors, with some reporting complete communication breakdowns. One owner revealed that their dealer did not respond to calls for two consecutive days, exacerbating the panic. "We are down to our last cylinder and are serving only simple items like rice, upma, and vermicelli to conserve our remaining fuel," another owner disclosed, illustrating the desperate measures being implemented.

The crisis underscores broader supply chain vulnerabilities and raises urgent questions about urban infrastructure support for migrant-dependent economic zones. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are calling for immediate interventions to restore LPG supplies and prevent further disruption to Bengaluru's vital IT workforce.
