Berhampur's PNG Pipeline Project Nears Completion, Promising Direct Kitchen Gas Supply
Residents of the silk city Berhampur and its adjoining areas in Ganjam district are on the verge of a significant infrastructure upgrade, as piped natural gas (PNG) will soon be available directly in their kitchens. According to the company responsible for city gas distribution, approximately 90% of the pipeline network work has already been completed, marking a major milestone in this energy project.
Pipeline Network Progress and Timeline
KVS Prasad, the general manager of city gas distribution at GAIL Gas Limited, provided detailed insights into the project's status. "We are expecting that the steel network will be completed over the next four months," he stated. The planned steel pipeline network spans 44 kilometers, with only 8 kilometers currently pending installation. This rapid progress indicates that the physical infrastructure is largely in place, paving the way for operational readiness.
Regarding regulatory approvals, Prasad noted that "all permissions for laying the pipeline, except through Ghodahada river, are in line." The company anticipates receiving the final permission for the river crossing very soon, which would remove the last bureaucratic hurdle. This comprehensive approach ensures that both construction and compliance are advancing simultaneously.
Official Review and Project Oversight
The project recently underwent a formal review by Ganjam collector V Keerthi Vasan, who assessed the progress of the PNG initiative in the district. During this evaluation, Vasan directed company officials to expedite the remaining work, emphasizing the importance of timely completion for community benefit. This governmental oversight underscores the project's significance in regional development and public utility enhancement.
Infrastructure Details and Strategic Location
Company officials elaborated on the supporting infrastructure, revealing that the city gas station is planned at Karakhandi village near Samarjhola. This station will be situated inside one of the IPS stations of GAIL's Srikakulam-Angul Pipeline (SAPL), leveraging existing pipeline assets for efficient distribution. This strategic location optimizes connectivity and resource utilization, ensuring a reliable gas supply network for the region.
The completion of this project will transform energy access in Berhampur and Ganjam, providing households with a cleaner, more convenient fuel option directly piped into their kitchens. With most of the network already laid and permissions largely secured, residents can look forward to the operational launch in the coming months, following the finalization of the remaining pipeline segments and regulatory clearances.
