Bokaro Steel Plant Launches Major Crackdown on Power Theft

In a significant operation targeting rampant electricity theft, officials from the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) conducted a two-day raid on Friday and Saturday, resulting in the seizure of over 3 kilometers of illegal cables. The crackdown focused on Sector 2A near the bustling Dundibagh market, where unauthorized connections were being used to power shops and vendors operating on encroached land.

Resident Complaints Trigger Action

The drive was initiated in response to persistent complaints from local residents about frequent power outages and dangerous voltage fluctuations in the area. These issues were traced back to illegal tapping of electricity from official poles, which not only disrupted supply but also posed serious safety risks.

A dedicated team, led by General Manager (Electrical) Rajul Halkarni, executed the operation with precision. They systematically identified and removed numerous unauthorized connections that had been drawn directly from electricity poles, bypassing legal meters and regulations.

Organized Misuse Uncovered

During the raid, officials confiscated approximately 3 kilometers of illegal wiring, primarily consisting of 4 mm and 6 mm cables. BSL spokesperson Manikant Dhan highlighted that the scale and type of cables seized point to an organized pattern of electricity misuse. "The operation revealed a systematic effort to steal power, with the seized cables indicating coordinated illegal activities," Dhan stated.

The illegal connections were found to be supplying electricity to various commercial establishments operating on encroached land, exacerbating the problem of unauthorized land use in the sector.

Impact and Future Measures

This crackdown is expected to alleviate the power supply issues faced by residents and enhance the overall safety of the electrical infrastructure in Bokaro. The Bokaro Steel Plant has emphasized its commitment to curbing such malpractices and plans to continue vigilance to prevent recurrence.

Authorities have warned that strict actions will be taken against those involved in electricity theft, underscoring the importance of adhering to legal power consumption practices to ensure reliable and safe electricity for all.
