Cabinet Greenlights Major Highway Project
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of a new access-controlled highway connecting Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh to Kabrai in Mahoba district. The project, estimated to cost Rs 7,145 crore, aims to provide seamless, high-speed connectivity between the two regions and strengthen onward links to Sagar, Bhopal, and other parts of Madhya Pradesh.
Project Details and Scope
The four-lane highway will be developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The 180-kilometer-long corridor will be built as a greenfield alignment, reducing travel time significantly. According to official sources, the project is expected to be completed within four years.
Economic and Strategic Impact
The highway will serve as a vital economic corridor, facilitating faster movement of goods and people between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. It is expected to boost trade, tourism, and industrial development in the region. The project will also improve access to Kabrai, known for its granite industry, and connect to the proposed Bundelkhand Expressway.
Government Statements
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, "This highway will transform connectivity in the region and spur economic growth. It is part of the government's commitment to building world-class infrastructure." The project is also expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities during construction and operation phases.
Environmental and Land Acquisition
Land acquisition for the project will be carried out in accordance with the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act. Environmental clearance has been sought from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The project includes measures for sustainable construction and wildlife conservation.
