75 km of Pavements Cleared in Bengaluru’s Safe Footpath Drive

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has cleared approximately 75 kilometers of pavements across the city as part of its ongoing safe footpath drive. The initiative aims to reclaim pedestrian spaces from encroachments, including vendors and parked vehicles. According to a BBMP official, the drive has been conducted across multiple wards, with a focus on high-traffic areas.

Protests Erupt in Majestic and Vijayanagar

In the bustling commercial hubs of Majestic and Vijayanagar, vendors opposed the eviction drive, citing loss of livelihood. Despite the protests, officials reported no untoward incidents. A senior BBMP official stated, "We are committed to providing safe walking spaces for citizens. While we understand the concerns of vendors, encroachments cannot be allowed on footpaths."

Impact on Vendors and Pedestrians

The drive has displaced hundreds of street vendors, many of whom have operated in these areas for years. Pedestrians, however, have welcomed the move. A local resident commented, "Walking has become much easier and safer now. Earlier, we had to walk on the road due to blocked pavements." The BBMP has assured that alternative vending zones will be identified for affected vendors.

Future Plans and Monitoring

The BBMP plans to extend the drive to other parts of the city, covering an additional 50 kilometers of footpaths in the coming months. Regular monitoring will be conducted to prevent re-encroachment. The civic body has also urged citizens to report any new encroachments through their helpline. The safe footpath drive is part of a larger city beautification project under the Smart City Mission.
